De La Calle Creadores Spotlight: Angélica Maria Aguilera
We here at De La Calle are excited to celebrate International Women's Month!
We want to take some time to honor women who are making a strong and lasting impact in their community. First up, we would like to shout out artist, speaker and educator Angélica Maria Aguilera! We chatted with Angélica (over a can of tepache of course) about life and what inspires her.
Q: What’s your name and what do you do?
A: My name is Angélica Maria, I am a Chicana singer & storyteller.
Q: How has your heritage shaped the woman you are today?
A: My heritage has taught me to balance the art of being resilient and soft. To care for others and for my dreams fiercely, and to never let the world tell me who I am.
Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?
A: "Take your time."
Q: How have you used your unique experiences to make a positive change in your environment and community?
A: Coming from a family of storytellers, I have used storytelling in both poetry and music to connect with my community in both the States and Mexico. I believe storytelling is a powerful place where we get to write and reclaim our own narratives.
Q: In what ways are you inspiring the women around you?
A: I hope to inspire women by moving and living through my mistakes, and learning every step of the way. I am currently working with an all women collective of musicians in Mexico City I.M YONI, and they inspire me daily.
Q: What message would you like to send out in celebration of International Women's Month?
A: "Mija, bet on yourself."
Q: Please tell us about your new song and what inspired you to make it!
A: My newest song is called "Que Placer De Ser Mujer" it comes out March 8th for Women's Day, and is composed and produced by an entire collective of Mexican and Central American women in Mexico City called I.M YONI. We just launched a kickstarter to fund the rest of our project, which can be found in the link of my instagram.
